It depends on what you want to listen to. There are wide range antennas and antennas used for specific frequency ranges.

A base discone antenna is not the best as it has unity gain on all frequencies. The dB gain on a discone is not a lot and really will not pull in weak signals. However, a discone is a great wide band antenna. This means that the antenna covers a wide range of frequencies.

There are some base antennas that are specifically tuned for specific frequencies. Radio Shack has one that has it's peak performance in the VHF range.

Radio Shack has a good selection as does ScannerMaster site.

There are also antennas that are used for handheld scanners. Radio Shack has a telescoping antenna that is a great antenna. They also have a antenna specifically tuned for the 800MHz range.

I don't see why not. I am no electronics mastermind, but seems to me an antenna is an antenna. It's feasible that the existing antenna is simply too quick to effectively pull in the sign, nevertheless it's valued at a shot. I discovered that the radio antenna does not ought to be on the outside of the vehicle - i couldn't rather find where the previous present antenna poked by means of, and ended up simply going for walks it to the trunk, it really works nice.

Best antenna for scanners is a base Discone antenna. They do cost more, but provide much better reception than any "whip" type of antennas. However, those are for home use only. To remain portable, the one you picked should be ok....
