New young Red Bellied Piranhas seem too just be hiding.?

Today I purchased 4 red bellied piranhas and introduced them too my tank. I have a large pirate ship and as soon as the hit the water they all hid inside. I dropped a few gold fish inside and left for about and hour, and when I returned the goldfish were eaten. But only one of the piranhas is out of the ship and seems too have eaten both.

From my angle, it appears one of this fish is stuck. He hasent moved and seems to be faced out towards me, watching my every move. The pirate ship has plenty of holes for escape but I cant tell if the fish are hurt or stuck.

Is this normal behaviour?

They were transported in a bucket and given a bumpy ride.

They've been there less than a day! Give them a break.

Almost any fish would act that way when first dropped into an unfamiliar environment.

It's highly unlikely they are stuck. They are just trying to take cover in the best shelter they can find in the tank.

Red-bellied piranhas also tend to be shy when they are alone or in too small a group. They do much better when they are kept in groups of at least 8 piranhas per group.

When you consider that they will grow to be roughly a foot and a half in diameter, for a group of 8-10 you need an aquarium of at least 250-300 gallons.

How come you have got cold water fish with tropical fish? The youngster piranha's will soon conclude off some other fish you have got in the tank & will even turn on each different, survival of the fittest. I've five adult piranha's in a 5ft tank with a large shoal of Neons & up to now after 3years the neons nonetheless survive since the piranhas are good fed, if goldfish were within the tank as well they might quickly be eaten because of the goldfishes colouration and so forth.

Piranhas are actually very shy fish, especially at first. Give them a few days to adjust and become comfortable before you get worried. I know personally I don't bother feeding any new fish the first day because they're usually too stressed to bother.

If you're really concerned about them being stuck in the ship, just reach in and move it a bit and see if they come streaking out. :)

Piranhas are skittish fish. They arent the aggressive glass bangers, they are just aggressive eaters
