Cpu automatic shut down?
Hi everyone
I use a 4 year old system(Desktop). Recently the cpu started shutting down automatically .When i try to restart it logs on but again the cpu gets off after a few minutes. I see the led on start button of CPU stops glowing and fans stop working, when i mean cpu shutting down. But i see the power to monitor and keyboard and mouse is still there.
Every time i turn on my system, I couldn't use it for more than 1 hour. I couldn't turn it on immediately again :( (It can't stay for more than 5 min).

thats a hardware failure probably due to over heating or the power supply has failed/is broken and is causing it to shut off suddenly.
Source(s): a CPU is the central processor, your talking about your PC/ computer/ tower, whatever you wanna call it, just stop calling it a CPU - ?Lv 68 years ago
Firstly, this is what a CPU looks like http://demo.idg.com.au/images/pcw/cpuguide7.jpg
It's a bit bigger than a postage stamp and it's slotted into the socket on the motherboard. Notice how it doesn't have any LED's ?
You're talking about the case.
Sounds like you have an overheating problem. The computer shuts itself down to avoid thermal damage and that's what is likely happening to yours.
Take the side off the case and verify that your heatsink/fan combo is properly installed and that the fan spins.
You might be lucky and it's just a dust problem. Dust is an insulator and if you've never cleaned the dust out of your case then you'll be surprised at just how much it can collect.
Turn the power off but leave it plugged in and clean the dust out with a can of compressed air.
Pay special attention to fans, vents and the CPU cooler (heatsink and fan) which will look similar to this http://www.computershopper.com/shoptalk/images/Gig...

As far as I know, CPU's doesn't have buttons,
CPU's look like this:

well anyway, i know that you we're talking about system unit/computer tower, you know what? it happens almost the same with my system, can't use it for more than an hour, after it freezes, shuts down and trying to turn on again, power LED doesn't glow too but fans are spinning, It was 1 month trying to rrepair it to save money, i drop the cpu, drop the motherboard, clean mobo with baby oil, put alcohol, no joke!!! i actually does it,., but i recommend pulling out the RAM, and let the PC turn on, if it beeps, your RAM might be having problem, if not, try to pull out video card, if it beeps, your video card might be having problem, if after pulling out RAM let the PC beep and shuts down itself, while waiting for it to shutdown, clean your RAM with isoprophyl alcohol and toothbrush...

Take the case off and check out the fan is working as it should and not broken its worth renewing the thermal paste. Check there is sufficient airflow around the case.
