crazy tesla coil issue help?

so im building a solid state and i have the coil part done so like torrid secondary primary ect.... so i tested it useing the system my smaller coil uses expecting it to work a little ...so i tuned it and the weirdest thing happend 2 foot long sparks started breaking out half way of the secondary and nothing from the top but if i take the torrid off nothing happen in the center at all somone explain why this is? and also does anyone know how to calculate the frequency of the secondary and torrid together i only know how to calculate the coil alone ..anyone? thats about it ..please help

Update:

the old coil was just a standard spark gap tesla coil if anyone was wondering. it may not be built for the new coil i made but i was hoping to use it as a way to test it for flaws before i got the solid state stuff the did not expect it to break out half way up the primary

Did the sparks shoot away from the coil, or run parallel right up against the coil?

If they shot away, your tuning is WAY off. This would also explain why things changed when you removed the toroid.

If they ran up and down the coil, the coupling between the primary and secondary was too tight and/or your secondary grounding was poor.

Use this to calculate resonant frequencies: http://deepfriedneon.com/tesla_frame6.html
