Should I get an 8 month old German shepherd?

She's 8 months old and she has NO training and very little socialization. Shes a generally nervous dog. She knows no basic commands, has been kept outside so she isn't housetrained, she's only been on the leash once, and only been in the car once. She isn't spayed either. She is registered and bred well, she just hasn't been worked with much. I have another dog in my house and a five year old boy. Should I risk getting her? And will I even be able to train her or is it too late and I shouldn't waste my time trying?

Dogs are much like humans, when you are experiencing something new, espescially around those you don't know, you will tend to be nervous. Same with the dog, at first the dog will be at unease, but over time your dog will slowly adjust to your living space and habit. Indoor dogs can be trained to be outdoor dogs and vice versa regardless of age, but in order to do so, you must get the dog to become confortable around you and those that live with you.

Sounds like this dog has not been treated very well .The fact that she is 8 months old and has had no socialization. My answer as to wither you should take on this dog lies with you as a person .It is never too late to train a a dog but it will take time and it will take patience. The problems with this dogs behavior...nervousness etc is due to neglect and it will be a challenge to turn her situation around but it can be turned around . if she is brought into a loving home and trained in the right way then you will have a different dog a year or less down the line.

For me ,my heart would just break at the way she behaves, knowing that her behavior is a result of the owners and her treatment over the last 8 months but that is me and we are talking about you .

Could you at this stage in your life take her on as a challenge?

Every dog is trainable just take it one step at a time and do not expect miracles. let her settle in her new home and socialize her slowly.

    Good luck!

There is nothing more satisfying than taking a a dog away from a crap life and rehabilitating him or her into a happy and healthy dog.....have done it many times!

Honestly, it would completely depend on your level of experience.

GSDs are a breed that need regular socialization during their early months to be stable and confident adults. Without that, she could end up being incredibly fearful or defensive - a dog that's not suited for most homes.

Sure she can be trained. GSDs naturally want to learn and need a job to do. It may take a longer amount of time, but I have no doubt that she can be house trained and taught basic commands. A lot of her learning ability will have to do with how you handle her fear whether it be towards strange people or of other dogs etc. It won't necessarily be easy and seeing that you have another dog and a young child, it might not be the best situation for you or the dog.

If you do take the dog, have her seen by a veterinarian to be sure she's UTD on vaccinations, clear of any underlying conditions and have her spayed. Then start working on training and socialization. Start with short confidence building exercises in the home and work your way up after she has become comfortable around you and your family.

It is never too late to train but you have to understand the amount of work is going to be doubled because this shepherd has been doing things a lot differently for the last eight months and those bad habits are engrained and hard to break. If you have extra time to spend with him I would go for it especially of you love dogs but if you don't have extra time don't even bother the dog deserves a home that will have time. Good luck I am currently training my six month old that I've had since he was four months and Ive got headaches more often then Not but the love and companionship is worth it.

If you can afford a trainer get her, if you can't she will be too much for you and a 5yr old boy.I had 4 German Shepherds and they are alot to handle when their tame no less one with no training. If you think that Petco or Petsmart training will help, forget it you'll have an untrained dog who is going to get more aggressive and harder to handle.

Going on what you have posted,I honesty think you would be biting off more than you can chew if you took on this dog.

But it`s your choice.....No one can make up your mind for you.

The fact you need advice from others, indicates you are very uncertain about what to do, so unless you are 100% sure that you can invest the time and patience needed that this dog will demand then I would give it a miss. Good Luck...
