Can an employer dock someone's pay for an honest mistake?

Such as forgetting to turn off a computer at night, accidentally leaving an air conditioner on overnight, spilling something and ruining a carpet, etc.

It depends on what state you are in. There is no federal law that prohibits this. Many states have a state law that either say you can't deduct the money for any reason in this circumstance. Other states have laws that allow the deduction, if the employee signs something agreeing to it.
