He stopped off at a yard sale and bought a used rod & reel, and with less than 24 hours still to go....?

....he entered the 2012 "SLAMMIN' SALMON DERBY" on Ship Creek right there in downtown Anchorage, Alaska. When the final minutes of the clock clicked down and the competition ended, he had won more than $500 cash, along with a NEW boat, trailer, and motor with his 47 inch king salmon. Because he was a soldier (originally from Oklahoma) stationed at the local Army base, he won an additional bonus of $250. It was the biggest fish AND the biggest prize he had ever won, and his "used" rod and reel turned out to be one of the BEST investments he'd ever made. {In my profile photo, I'm holding the sculpture we made of his winning fish just before we delivered it to him.}

In 1978, I purchased a 9' Marlin and an 8' sailfish at a flea market for LESS than $100 for the pair. After some minor restorations, I traded the two to a dealer for a new 10' tri-hull fiberglass boat. That was probably one of MY better deals. But probably the BEST for me was creating a reproduction of a tiger-muskellunge that a friend caught in Utah and for which he traded a pretty, little California-Custom (convertible rag top) mini Dodge Pickup.

What's the "BEST INVESTMENT" that YOU have ever made relating to fish or fishing?

Update:

{OR....What's the biggest and MOST unexpected fish you ever caught on the least expensive tackle?}

    I entered a free fantasy football contest that a member of a fishing forum was holding. I ended up winning the consolation match for 3rd place, taking home a Dobyns Savvy Series rod. I sold the rod and bought a Revo SX with the money. That was my first baitcaster and I haven't looked back since. I'm now the proud owner of several more Revos, and even a couple Dobyns rods (which are fantastic).

    Not bad for a little bit of time and effort, huh? The cool part about it, besides the fishing stuff, is that I'm now taking all of my friends' money in FF leagues LOL. I have always been a big football fan, but before joining that contest I only knew of a handful of players outside of the Broncos. Now, I can name just about every starting offensive player for any team, their position, and their value relative to fantasy football. It makes watching the boring games entertaining. There's always somebody to root for (or against)... even if they don't play for the best team in the league (Broncos!) Haha

    Sorry about getting a little bit (or a lot!) off subject, but you get the idea. I won a baitcaster and now my spinning gear sits unused 90% of the time. I also acquired a new hobby and form of comaradie in the process.

    Sabaki are how to go or you need to use cutbait. I do not see a obstacle with walmart rods until they are those which are under 10 bucks. Otherwise you got a deal seeing that the ones that i had lasted at least 5 years and counting. The ten rods have lasted 6 months and not using a challenge however afterward i had to do maintence work specifically with the reel. This was the zebco 2 slingshot rods i am speakme about. I used to reside in the area and that i would not have much boating experience, however I do be aware of you need a higher rod on the grounds that most of the stuff you trap available in the market could be in the 15-50lb+++ classification. Thus you want a deep sea fishing rod and you should use 30lb line but to be trustworthy 50lb line. You'll additionally need a excellent deep sea fishing reel with very good drag.Lots of the fish i have caught for the duration of deep sea fishing i used both live bait regularly the mackerels you caught and i friend the discipline chiefly if i am targetting tuna , bonito, or different schooling fish.If that you could fork up sufficient to rent a boat with a advisor they're going to show you. That's how i realized

    My favorite lure. I remember the first purchase. I told my brother over and over the thing wasnt worth 7 bucks. Well...he proved me wrong 5 years later and tons of species that lures my first purchase on every trip to the sports store. I never go to d!cks and leave without one. That lure the "yo zuri crystal minnow" has landed largemouth bass,bluegill,smallmouth bass,crappie,carp,pickerel,pike,striped bass,bluefish,yellow perch,bowfin,brown/rainbow trout,catfish,prettt much anything you can name in fresh or saltwater that things landed for me. I LOVE IT. Heck I even landed a bass in February with it once. All I can say is if I ever went pro I would sponsor yo-zuri for free.

    BQ-Really big brown trout on that lure^^. I would put it in the 5 lb range. I didnt weigh it though. It was on a yo zuri. My friend did catch a burbot though once.
