    First thing is first. Here's an awesome site you will find yourself constantly referring to;

    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

    1. Just strum it without really playing anything at all. The point behind this is to learn where the strings are so you don't have to keep looking at your picking hand.

    2. Learn an easy song. Something easy like the intro to "Smoke On The Water" nothing by Avenged Sevenfold or anything else that uses more then basic power chords. Whatever you choose, repeat it over and over again until you can play it somewhat fast with minimal mistakes.

    3. LEARN YOUR CHORDS! Alot of people make the mistake of just ignoring this.

    4. Now that you have the basic chords down, step it up and try learning a moderate difficulty song, something such as the intro to "Master Of Puppets" which is still easy for a beginner while at the same time testing their skills.

    5. Now it's time to learn tricks. Practice techniques such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, and harmonics

    6. Now that you have a basic understanding on how to handle the guitar, now it's time to start learning your favorite songs from the more difficult bands
