Will my iPod lose everything if I update it to iOS5?

I have a 3rd generation and half of the apps I want require iOS5, but when I started looking around on how to update it, articles were saying once I updated my iPod I would lose all of my songs, videos, ect. Which is a huge no-no to me.

    If the music is accessible then yeah basically back up and itll be secure. And basically pictures you have taken are secure. now.if its music which you downloaded else the place then it gets deleted. yet to guard apps and music to procure basically back it up.
