Can Amy be a nickname for Amber?
I can see it being a nickname. Can you?

I suppose it could but work but honestly Amber is beautiful without a nickname and with Amber and Amy both being to syllables it doesn't really sound like that much of a nickname.

Amy can be a nickname for Amber in the same way that Katie or Fred can. Nicknames aren't required to be shortened versions of the person's full name.

No, Since Amy is a full name on its own... Maybe a personalised nickname like "Amby Bambie"?
By personalised nicknames, I mean cute and colourful nicknames full of character. e.g.:
Lily- LilyBug
Claire- ClaireBear
Amber- AmbyBaby, AmbyBarbie or "AmbyBambie".
p.s. I think the name Amber is beautifully feminine, and i can already picture an intelligent and very lady-like blonde little girl.

It's not something Amy would normally be a nickname for but it could work.

I don't think so. Amy is a full name on its own, and it doesn't even share the same sounds as Amber. Plus, they take the same amount of effort to say.
