Dairy free smoothies (no soy milk) recipes?

My mom is completely lactose intolerant. She can't even have soy milk, no dairy products at all. Even that hurts her stomach for some reason. I am looking for smoothies for her to drink in the morning thats lactose free but I keep finding ones with soy or coconut milk. I was thinking what are some powder substances that will make up for it. Like coconut powder? What do you suggest?

I recommend almond milk. It's obviously dairy free, and it's easy to make yourself (Soak almonds overnight in preferably non-tap water, in the morning drain and rinse, then blend it with water. Strain it with a cheese strainer over and over until it's smooth.) However it's readily available. I've been drinking almond milk before it got big, and honestly the only company I buy from is Blue Diamond. The rest are fine, but B.D. is just my favorite. My opinion.

Anyway, as far as smoothies, which I love to make, here are some blends that I do often.

Fresh baby spinach + frozen mango + frozen blueberries + chia seeds + frozen banana + (natural, none of that hydrogenated oil stuff) sunflower butter + almond milk (my serving size is a lot, I usually use a 32 oz of milk and add from there but that's just because I'm very active and consume a lot).

Or you can do something like...

Coconut shreds (make sure the only ingredient is COCONUT!) + fresh baby spinach or fresh kale + frozen pineapple + two pinches of ground nutmeg + a pinch of ground cinnamon + almond milk.

There's soooo much you can use honestly. I mainly use frozen fruits in my smoothies because 1) it gives the consistency I like in a smoothie without needing to use ice (Added water = no good..for the sake of taste). I like to add sunflower butter because of the caloric intake (Again, very active), that smooth nutty taste, the nutrient content (especially magnesium, vitamin e, selenium) but sometimes i'll use peanut butter or almond butter. Adding coconut shreds really is up to your (or your mother's) taste because it'll give you something to chew on when you're drinking, but it's a good filler-upper for your stomach if you're looking to limit how much you consume. Adding the spices just aid the taste but also provide nutritional benefits.

If you want more recipes, drop me an e-mail. I've been getting back on board, back in the days I used to have a book full of my own recipes because I just loooove to make smoothies!

Oh yeah, don't worry about powdered "milk".

soy milk is completely different than dairy milk and does NOT contain dairy OR lactose so if she reacts to soy milk, she has other intollerances than just lactose.

You can make all fruit smoothies. Use banana, and what ever else fruit you like. No need for ANY dairy in a smoothie just because traditionally they contain some type of milk.

  • Soy and coconut should not be a problem for someone who is lactose intolerant. If she can have coconut powder, she should be able to have coconut milk, as it's lactose free. Or you can use almond milk, rice milk, oat milk, or other plant-based milk. If they're vegan, they're free of lactose and any dairy proteins that might cause your mom distress.

Can she have almond milk? If so, try that as a replacement for the dairy milk or soy milk in most smoothie recipes. That's what I use, and there's no difference in flavor!

I agree with the choice of almond milk. A great new flavor and here are a host of smoothies to try that use almond milk - http://www.smoothieweb.com/tag/almond-milk/ or just substitute the almond milk for regular milk in any smoothie recipe.
