Australia is a large country, the same size as the USA. It has a wide range of climates from desert to rainforest and from alpine meadows with snowy winters to tropical coasts. One third of Australia is north of the Tropic of Capricorn getting within 10° of the equator. Southern Australia is on the Southern Ocean and the next land to the south is Antarctica. If you want to check the climate of any part of Australia or look at maps showing average conditions, use the Bureau of Meteorology site here http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/

The seasons in Australia are the reverse of the northern hemisphere. We follow the northern European idea of four seasons of three months each and these are Spring - September, October, November; Summer - December, January, February; Autumn - March, April, May; and Winter - June, July, August. We start our seasons on the first of the month not the equinox or solstice. Northern Australia is warm all year round with a marked wet and dry season with summer being the wet season.

There are a couple of important things to know about Australia.

The Earth moves in an elliptical orbit. When we have our Summer the Earth is 9 million miles (if I remember correctly) closer to the sun than when the Northern Hemisphere has theirs.

The opposite is true for Winter.

As such our climate is far more extreme for a given latitude.

We also have a huge heat sink occupying most of the continent. When the wind blows in from the Outback during Winter it will freeze the goolies of a drunken bunyip.

In the north it is warm and humid year round (about 30-35C). In other areas, it is generally cool/moderate in the winter and warm/hot in the summer. It'll rarely get close to freezing and most days in places like Melbourne and Sydney will be in the mid-high 20s in the summer, with occasional heatwaves sometimes pushing temperatures up to the 40s. In the outback, it will be in the mid-high 30s every day. Tasmania the coolest state in the summer with temperatures usually only in the low 20s.

There's a lot of rain in the north and less so in the south, but it's still pretty unpredictable.

Our climate is as diverse as our continent is large ..

From the far north which has a tropical climate with times of extreme humidity & heavy rainfall to the arid interior & cooler south ...

We don't experience blizzard like conditions like many northern hemisphere countries & no largely populated cities get snow but the temperature variations are wide .
