Putting a dog to sleep?

How do you get over putting a dog to sleep and how do you know the dog does not blame you. I stayed with the dog and pet him, put my arms around him, told him I loved him...he licked my face etc. He was gone so quick...anyway this was a few hours ago and I have been so upset ever since and can't stop crying. I need to know he is ok and I hope in Heaven. He was not my dog but I took care of him and his owners did not want to stay with him when he was put down. I loved that dog so much and I almost asked the vet to put me to sleep too. I knew he wouldn't though.....If you are going to be mean please don't answer, I can't stop crying as it is.

My dog is 15 now and I know that his day will be coming. I will be just like you. Staying with him to the very end. Your dog doesn't blame you at all. You don't say why you had to put him to sleep but, I'm sure it was to spare him from suffering. I believe with all my heart and soul that dogs do go to Heaven. The same Heaven that we go to. I fully believe that your dog is up there right now running around in what has to be the best dog park in the universe and then when it finally your time to go, your dog will be there waiting for you. Happy, healthy and in no pain. You will see him again. What you did was your final unselfish act of love for your dog. He knows that.

I know it hurts really bad right now. You are no doubt still in shock and are grieving. I can't tell you how long you will grieve because each of us grieve in our own time and way but, know that one day, all the memories that are causing you so much pain right now will become very fond and happy memories. You will always love your dog but, it will get easier in time. Your dog will always love you too.

My dog had a stroke 3 months ago and almost died. I wanted to die with him if he did but, luckily he is recovering but, he is 15 now. You will see your dog again. I know it.

I think that is a terrible reason to put a dog to sleep. Sick and hurt and suffering everyday with no hope is a fine reason but not if someone is bored. That person should rather just try to rekindle the fun. After all, everything gets boring once in a while but you can always try to have more fun again rather than replacing it. Besides, dogs are not toys.

I am so sorry for what you are going through. Just remember and cherish the memories that you shared together. They will never ever fade and will always keep you strong. When my son Tobie passed away, I found this poem below to help me get through it. And the dog you lost would want you to move on and love another dog. My prayers are with you always.

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I have been through this myself, he sounds like he was quite ill and the vet would only put him down if he was in a lot of pain. you will never get over it you will always remember him, remember all the good times and how happy you were together. the thing about animals is they do not hold grudges they live in the moment and he will be happy now he is not in pain. and the last thing he will remember is your loving embrace :)

my advice to you is cry your heart out but have some headache tablets on hand

I can TOTALLY understand you how you are feeling right now! What I did is 1). Just cry it all out (because your body will stop making tears! 2). try to get it off your mind ( hang with friends, or go outside anything you can do to get your mind off it! 3). try planning on getting a new puppy ( AS LONG AS YOUR READY FOR ONE!) (don't push your self into getting one when your not ready!) 4). Know that he wont me suffering anymore, and that he is chasing all the cats that he can! 5). God will take care of him for you! You can trust God!
