What level of language proficiency can one expect to reach with Rosetta Stone language programs?

They offer 5 levels of French , Mandarin , Russian , Italian and Spanish and German, 3 levels of Swedish , Japanese, Korean , Turkish,Tagalog, Irish, Hindi and others . One level of Swahili , and Urdu .. http://www.rosettastone.com/

I was curious how their courses relate to the Common European Framework of levels of language proficiency. A1 is beginner's and C2 is complete fluency

The problem I had with Rosetta Stone... is that it seemed to push out vocabulary and random phrases. I felt like it didnt provide me with the grammar skills and tricks I needed as I tried to learn Swahili, Russian, Italian, etc. While it is true that you build your basic knowledge of a language off of vocabulary, sentence structure and grammar are extremely important as well. With this experience, I wouldnt think that you would gain complete fluency from the program.

Non-linguists in the military use Rosetta Stone, just for in country familiarization. Rosetta Stone is available online for free for Active Duty troops now. A lot of guys use it, maybe for their own edification or maybe to learn some of the language of their new girl friend. ;) Actual military linguists go through the Defense Language Institute. They are taught by native instructors, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for the duration. They learn enough to be able to watch live news broadcasts and read newspapers in their target language. Spanish is about 6 months. Arabic, Chinese, etc, is longer than a year!

I had a terrible time with this program, it refused to save my progress and wasn't helpful.
