After my months were up it took about four because I stopped for a month .. just this month it was over ... When I saw the doc he said my nais were beautiful and I can go to the nail spa . So I went and the sign said $10 ... But the lady said that if I wanted my hard skin removed it would be 15... They got lucky ~ so far. It's also possible they have it and don't recognize it yet. It can look white across the toenails before it gets thick and yellow and look horrible. Some people have the fungus and no symptoms, but are spreading it to others unknowingly. You can pick it up just showering after them or walking barefoot where they do.
Look for one that keeps the tools they used sealed where they unseal a new pack for each new customer. Look around to see that all their tools are brought out from sterilizing equipment machines and/or sterilizing liquid. Better ~ bring your own tools and polishes.
If a tool is dropped on the floor, it is no longer sterile, and should not be used. If they try to use it on you, stop them, and the process ~ and leave.
Make sure you see the person wash their hands before they start your pedicure.
If a shop looks dirty or dilapidated or super busy, don't go there. Go to the bathroom first; if it's dirty, don't use that salon.
Go as early in the morning as you can and on a less busy day than a Friday or Saturday.
Request the foot tub vs. the jet baths as the filters are supposed to be changed after each customer, but they don't do it and rarely if ever wait long enough to do a proper sterilization.
Don't shave your legs the day you go for a pedicure. Don't get pedicures if you have any nicks, scrapes, or cuts anywhere on your legs or feet ~ or a nail fungus already.
Don't let them cut or use metal to remove hard skin on your feet or cuticles. They'll grow back raggedy, and risk infection. They can use pumice stones and cuticle remover lotions and wooden cuticle sticks to push back and remove cuticles. It's best if you bring your own with these tools, too.
Don't walk around anywhere barefoot ~ not in the shop or anywhere else, especially public places and outside. Bacteria and fungus are easily transferred from places you wouldn't even think of ~ the shower, shared towels, beach sand, grass. You can even get it on one toenail, and spread it to the others yourself ~ and even your fingernails ~ just by touching one then the other with either your hands, towel, wash cloth, etc.
Certain fungus can be deadly and even cause amputation, so it's imperative to go to a salon you trust to be clean and practice sanitary procedures. Finding one, however, can be daunting. Those health inspectors rarely check every salon or often enough to know what they do on a daily basis.
