How do I get my money back?

Basically, I started a new bank account so I am new to this. I went to a cash machine and pressed 'Deposit' and it said put it in an envelope and put it in the deposit flap. No envelope came, so I just put my £20 in anyway. I then had to select the amount on screen so I pressed ' Deposit £5' because I didn't want to deposit the whole £20 at once. So I now wanted to withdraw £10 so that I can get some of it back but it simple said that I haven't got enough money in my account!! How will I not have enough money for £10 if i put in £20? It then said that I only have £5 in my account.

So please can someone tell me what happened? Where is the rest of my money gone and how can I get it back?

Update:

I'm not dumb, I'm just new to this system. Anyway Sarah- you said something about paper trail and stuff. How will they already know what i've done if I don't tell them? How is it possible to get camera footage? Please explain I don't understand what you mean.

Update 2:

PS- what is Failblog.org?

you need to go into the bank personally..and explain what you did and when. then ask them to teach you proper procedures for atm usage.

First, you have screwed yourself. When something says put it in an envelope, you HAVE to put it in an envelope. Next, the machine can't read what you put in, that's why it asked you for an amount - when you put in £5 as your deposit, it credited you with a £5 deposit - you should have told the machine you were depositing £20.

You need to go to the bank and ask for a customer service representative. Tell them what you did (yes, when you leave they will laugh at you - this was really dumb). It may take a day or two to straighten out (they will have to open up the machine and see if there is a £20 note floating around and they may have to check the cameras to verify what you did.

  • You need to call the bank or walk inside and talk to a Teller that will point you to a Manager. They probably already know and have posted pics to Failblog.org, And the guy that opens the machine must been like, "What the heck was this girl trying to do?!"

I'm sure it happens all teh time, but they already know and have a paper trail and video, so they'll give you a quick lesson too.
