Are your typical small business website(s) ready to jump into HTML5?
I'm wondering if I should use XHTML for a job or boldly use HTML5, but since I'm not sure, its more reckless than bold really. Are you using HMTL5 for your everyday projects?

HTML5 is a long way from done. At this point I don't see any compelling reason to use it for business websites.

They have no idea what you're talking about. They just want to be online.
HTML5 has plenty of impact for the semantic web, as it helps you with structuring your content in a much better way than XHTML.
I use HTML5 for my employer's everyday projects, though sometimes we have to go back to HTML4 for a couple of clients who are standarized at Internet Explorer 6.

There are countless places where you can buy a domain and host your website (godaddy, hostgator and others, choose your own). Simple website you're describing should be easy to put together and once it's done, the most important part of anyone's online presence begins: promoting website for people to find it. Posting articles online (to article directories) is the easiest way to do that. Hope that helps.
