I would like to disagree with the above otherwise excellent answer by saying Unix is the OS which Linux is derived from. He appears to be talking about the bash shell which we use for the command line. Linux is not Windows, it is a Unix--derived OS and many of us literally used dual booting to take years to switch from one OS to another. You will definitely face challenges but frankly, with Windows 8 and other things I expect you will face challenges if you don't learn multiple OSes so try dual booting or running Linux in a Virtual Machine.

    Hi

    Jplat39

    "Linux is not Windows",

    True

    "it is a Unix--derived OS "

    False

Linux was built from the ground up it is not a derivative of unix (just ask Linus Torvalds)

Linux is a unix complaint system.

"linux OS completely a good idea"

Yes as long as your course leader does not object.

I have done a university IT course using puppy linux only.

As as you can see from below I have not used Microsoft for 7 years

(I have repaired lots of microsoft operating systems.)

Linux is so reliable that I have never had a Linux PC that needed a reinstall.

(I don't use or advocate ubuntu or mint as they are to cutting edge and tend to break. when updated. Puppy is not updated so does not suffer that problem!!

"would i face some difficulty or unease in computing??? "

    Yes

but as a computer science engineering student you MUST learn about Linux as its the most commonly used computer in engineering.

CNC, Cars, aircraft, Tractors, Lorry's, microwaves, Hospital equipment, NASA, google, SERN, Yahoo even microsoft's own servers!!! all use Linux.

Source(s): I work as a Linux educator and IT Tech, My day job. And I use Puppy Linux in the office with clients and at home, as its a mid range Linux with no restrictions therefore puppy is a great learning tool as well as an every day desktop. I have used Puppy since version 0.1 in June 2003 and professionally for the last 7 years. I agree with 2 of the three answers above.

    Just my 2 cents:

"Is switching to linux OS completely a good idea in your opinion?"

It is the best decision you can make.

"would i face some difficulty or unease in computing??? what you say?????????????"

Yep. As with anything, there is a learning curve. You can be an F-14 Tomcat Ace, but you will not be able to jump to a UH-60 Blackhawk and expect to be an expert pilot from the get go.

The same with Winblows to GNU/Linux. It takes time to learn. I am not saying it is hard, it just takes time to get out of "Wimblows mode". But if you can get out of winblows mode, it will be the best decision you can make.

Linux OS uses much more of the terminal than Windows or OSX. My advice to you is that if you're unfamiliar with Unix (which is the most popular Linux terminal box shell language) to at least get the basics down with that before continuing on to using Linux. Linux is really nice though if you know how to use it. As a computer science engineering student, I'm pretty sure you won't have that many issues to fix up once you start using it.

    Hope this helps!
