what language should I learn?

I have been thinking about learning a new language lately. I have been particularly interested in Latin, but I know that Spanish, Japanese, or German would be more practical. What would you recommend?

The language with the widest geographical distribution after English is French. This is because French has long been a popular second language, and because French influence in years past led to its widespread use in diplomacy, the military, legal contexts, etc.

Note that there's a big difference between geographic distribution and the number of speakers. Chinese has the greatest number of native speakers, but almost all of them live in China, so it's not widely distributed geographically and isn't very useful for travel outside of China. French has fewer speakers, but throughout much of the world, if you can't find someone who speaks English, the next best language to try is French.

Americans tend to believe that Spanish is the most widely spoken language, but that's not true at all. It is spoken in parts of the Americas, and in Spain. But in South America, for example, most people speak Portuguese (the language of Brazil). However, Spanish might be a good second language to learn inside the United States, since there are many Spanish speakers in the country, some of whom never bother to learn English.

Latin is a practical language to learn if you want to learn other languages after, most languages use Latin roots. Latin is also easy. If not then I suggest French or Spanish as they are easier languages And practical

    personally, I'd recommend Mandarin...

But learn whichever language you are interested in the most--it'll be better in the long run.

In my opinion, there's no point in forcing yourself to learn something 'practical' when you are not interested in it.

or why not learn all languages one after the other? that'll be cool
