How to remove an old bathtub drain?

I'm about to remove an old bathtub to put in a fancy new one and of course the first step is to get the drain out. I have the proper tool that fits down inside the drain and is supposed to let you turn it out with a wrench but the last time I tried this, the "spokes" inside the drain all broke and I had to take it out in little pieces. Does anyone have some suggestions to avoid such a disaster this time?

if I am throwing the tub out I just use a reciprocating saw and make 2 cuts about 3/8ths of an inch apart in the drain and remove that piece then I can bend the drain fitting to close that gap and they screw right out
