if all stones are the same quality and size which is worth more, a diamond, sapphire, ruby or emerald?
I have a diamond ring with a large centre diamond surrounded with smaller diamonds, I was thinking of replacing the centre diamond with another stone, probably one of the last 3 listed. I was hoping to find a jeweler who would do the work and provide the new stone in exchange for keeping the original diamond but I would like to know if what I'm thinking of would be outrageously in the jewelers favour or if I'm asking too much to be done for something that isn't worth much. The diamond is a standard cut, don't know the carat size but its about 3 mm across the top

Impossible to answer without knowing the quality of the center diamond AND the quality and size of the replacement stone. Carats are meaningless in terms of value!

A 3mm diamond if properly cut will weigh 10 points (0.10 carats) No matter what stone you pick you are going to come out on the wrong end of the deal, the jeweller must find and buy the new stone, pay for his work AND make a profit and believe me a 10 point diamond - even the bast quality - is not going to do much towards all those costs.
Unless you really dislike the ring your best bet is to keep it as it is, if you must change it be prepared to spend some money with the hope that the diamond just reduces your bill a bit.

Diamond by far at 55,000 a gram only three other minerals are more expensive.
The question in it's self is difficult to answer it's like would you rather have a $1000 dollars worth of pizza or $1000 worth of pasta. Your exchanging on item for something that is supposedly the same price. Your call. For a diamond you can get a much higher quality gem but it wont be worth more.
The gems can range dramatically in price. ie: Sapphire could be like $20 for a small carving to over $1000 a carat for unheated sapphire(the best). You can get $26600 per carat for the most expensive diamond(best color and clarity).
Exchanging the diamond for anything else will be a downgrade, since the jeweler will be making a profit off your exchange. You will end up getting less than what you started with.

I choose Emeralds. I even have some Emerald rings and a bracelet. My engagement ring had an Emerald and Diamond wrap, it substitute into captivating. I nevertheless positioned on it each so often, purely on my top hand.
