I pod question concerning music library?

i have reset my I pod touch 3g and started from scratch as I have set up my own I tunes account. I have added some cds to my i pod which is connected to a home share on my laptop. I've noticed there is 2 libraries on the I pod and if I click off the iTunes library on laptop I lose all the songs in the named library. how do I stop this do I need to be in the other library (which i assume is the original library)and if so how do I do it I don't even know how I have 2 libraries . I'm due to go on holiday and I'm not taking the laptop with me so it will be switched off do I need to be using Icloud this is very confusing as im not technical minded thankyou for any advice

Update:

also my ipod has now froze and wont let me do anything music wise why cant they make things easier as were not all techno minded I just want to be able to play music on it nothing else.

Update 2:

hi thank you for the help but I'm still struggling I've managed to turn of the sync I pod on my computer (I think) but when I plug in my I pod I cant find anywhere where it says manage I pod. I have also reset my I pod to as a new I pod before plugging it in . Do I still need to have the home sharing switched on or do I deactivate this and do I back up files to I cloud or my computer . It appears I have songs on I pod but there is no volume now and they don't play . It also still says I have to folders for music still

The best way is to use 'manually manage' option. That way, you can add the songs you like without ever losing them when you connect to two different computers. You have to start from scratch again.

Does your iTunes sync your iPod automatically? If so, go to iTunes, Edit, Preferences, Devices and tick the box that says 'Prevent iPod, etc from syncing automatically'.

Connect your iPod, click on your iPod in iTunes and check the box 'Manually mange music and videos'. Now all you have to do is select the songs of your choice from the iTunes library, drag and drop them on your iPod. You can even create playlists if you want.

Apple products freeze a lot. When that happens, you can restart it. Just hold the home and power button until it powers off and restarts by itself.

    Hope this helps :)

EDIT: oh and make sure you also tick that box in Preferences for your laptop or any computer you plan to connect your iPod. You have to do this before you connect your iPod to the computer.

Never sync your iPod again. It just complicates things. Add new songs manually to your iPod through your iTunes library.
