How do YOU tell the difference between "big clubs" or "small clubs" ?

i just read a Q about big clubs / small clubs, and it made me wonder ....

When YOU describe a "big" or "small" club do you -

1. consider a clubs history first?

2. a clubs recent trophy wins?

3. money being spent on players / stadiums?

4. their positions in the league at the end of the current season?

5. or any other considerations? (explain)

Thanks everyone, have a lovely day!

A mixture of fanbase and clubs history determines the size of a club in my opinion.

Basically it should be pretty obvious to anyone that in England Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United, Aston Villa, even Everton and Man City are all big clubs.

Hull City, Charlton, Bury and Sotckport are not.

Well just look at it this way: take Spain for example(La Liga): the big clubs are apart of Liga BBVA & the smaller clubs play in Liga Adelante. FC Barcelona is a big football club team & FC Barcelona B is a sub-football club team which is part of the small club. So depending on it's history, trophy wins, money spend on players/stadiums, the positions in the league at the final season, can also tell a difference as well. But players from smaller clubs can also move up to bigger clubs, when they reach their full potential in their primes, make it to the top, & make a name for themselves.

A combination of club history, recent success (not necessarily trophies) and fanbase. I reckon all three factors are needed to establish the team as a big club. For example, Nottingham Forest have history but they don't have recent success or a big fanbase. So they are not a big club.

Money spent on players doesn't matter that much, look at Arsenal. Size of stadium doesn't matter that much either, some big clubs have relatively small stadiums like Liverpool and Chelsea. They both could easily sell out 60,000 capacity stadiums week in, week out. So the fanbase matters here. Trophies won doesn't matter that much either, a team can still be amongst the best without winning much, like Arsenal.

Source(s): watching them win and win well over many years now ... the Roman Army lol
  • Probably a combination of a selection of those things , Liverpool are still a big club as are Arsenal without any recent big trophy wins

I think you have to take it all in to account plus the amount of fans the club attracts

I don't know how anyone can call a club small if they have god knows how many millions of fans around the world
