Dakota became two states, so you are not being specific when you say "southern Dakota".

"Southern" California is not a specific area. South Dakota and South Carolina are actual state names with specific boundaries.

Because South Dakota and South Carolina are the names of the States. California is California and South Dakota is the name given to the State also.

South Dakota and South Carolina are the proper names of states. There is no state named South California or Southern Dakota.

Because both the Dakotas and the Carolinas are two different states.... You must not be from California if you're asking this because we say Southern California, not "South California" since it is one state.
