If you call and order they should give you a reservation code or some such to give to the conductor, who will give you and then lift your ticket.

plusSome unstaffed stations also have "conductor delivery" options, where conductors will receive the tickets from a prior (staffed) station, and when you board, the conductor will have your ticket available for you.

Note, that's only for *some* unstaffed stations.

An unstaffed station may just be a building. You cant buy tickets at an unstaffed station.

For example, A my local Amtrak station, which is a grand Harvey House, not one train ticket can be purchased because it is an unstaffed station.

I don't think you can buy Amtrak tickets unless it is a Surfliner pass, but that is only in southern California.

*I forgot to say you can only buy the surfliner tickets because you can buy Metrolink tickets too (Southern California Regional rail)

Some unstaffed stations have quik-trak kiosks, you'll need a credit or debit card. If it doesn't have a kiosk or you want to pay cash, you will need to buy it once you get on the train. You should call ahead to find the price and make sure you will be able to get a seat.

Some stations have vending machines that sell tickets. I am not sure if they all do.
