Why Does It Matter Who or What People Marry?

Really, why does it matter if two people of the same sex love each other and get married? Why does it matter if a person wants to marry a stinking shovel? Who cares? If the person is happy, then let them be. Live and let live.

Before I hear anything about marriage being a primarily religious institution, it is no longer one. Marriages are blessed by religious leaders, generally, but they don't have to be. Marriage has become a secular event, and it is completely understandable if a church wishes to BLESS only heterosexual couples, but people who want to marry a person of the same sex (or a shovel) should be able to do so without religion or the church butting in.

Update:

@The first three people to answer, you guys are great (and funny, especially Lloyd). Ah, Limbaugh. . .

Update 2:

@Brianna Well, I think that for religion to even have a place in government, it should have to be proven reasonably well that God exists in the first place, and after that, that the will of this God is known to anyone. If those two things can't be proven, I don't know why we're even considering it, to be honest. Everyone deserves a voice in government, but the decisions that are made should be founded on logic and compassion for others, not in something that can't be proven.

Update 3:

@Fried Kitten I laughed so hard I nearly fell out of my chair. Ah, we always have to watch out for those shovel right activists. For the record, I do think that needed some clarification. No, I don't think that non-human partners (such as shovels and animals) should get the benefits humans do unless one of them unexpectedly becomes truly sentient and intelligent enough that they require such benefits. I'm all for the rights of animals and protecting their lives (we're all animals; let's just be honest), but giving animals marriage benefits is way too over the top.

    BENEFITS

I’m agreeable to marriage with a shovel from an emotional perspective.

I can’t tell you who or what to love.

The problems arise when it comes to benefits.

Must your employer’s health plan provide coverage for your shovel?

If the shovel breaks must the insurer pay for its repair?

Should your shovel have spousal rights?

These questions sound ridiculous but you can be certain that once a

shovel can become a spouse a lawyer will attempt to get benefits and

    rights for the shovel.

This sounds like an answer, not a question..... Well if your ruling out religous purposes then IDK. Some people consider it Atheist to marry the same sex because God says that marrage is between a man and a woman......But i love alot of gay guys soo.... But god didnt make Adam and Adam right? But sadly i believe people deserve to be happy and we'll figure it out in the next life.:)

Gay marriage could negatively affect the sanctity of one or two of Rush Limbaugh's marriages.

    Won't anyone think of Rush?

It doesn't. This is simply a wedge issue dreamed up by the right-wing power machine to keep their base riled up, angry, confused and scared.
