Numbness is usually caused by a nerve getting compressed at a joint. Besides shoes that don't fit, compression can be caused by physical abnormalities of the bones, cartilage damage, tendonitis, or muscle injuries from overuse. Overuse commonly occurs when sitting or sleeping. It can occur when sitting if you support the weight of your foot by your toes, or by bending or rotating your ankle and holding it for long periods in a bent position while sitting or sleeping. If you can't identify a cause, see a podiatrist.
