What is a good heart rate while working out?

My heart rate gets up to 190 and over usually when i work out. I've been told i have a fast resting heart rate but I'm trying to get in really good shape and i want to lower it how do i do that?

190 is not good, and not necessarily safe in the long run.

Official heart rate recommendations vary depending on age but 100-140 for a 20 year old and 98-137 beats per minute if you're 25 is a lot nearer the 'safe heart' mark.

Another way to find out how hard to push your heart is to only go as far as 50-70% of your maximum safe heart rate (220bpm minus your age), so assuming you're 20 that'd be 50 to 70% of 200 bpm, i.e. only pushing your heart as high as 100 bpm to 140 bpm.

The safe limits are the same depending on which way you go about working them out.

Anyways, for more info on how best to exercise etc, take a look at http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticl... .
