Why is the news in the USA so censored?

I recently travelled in Europe and watched the news a lot. I couldn't believe how much censorship we have in the USA. Why is this? I always thought we were such a great country with no censorship. I am hoping Al Jazeera comes to the USA soon and shows the same material as in Europe. Has anyone else experienced this?

Welcome to the freest country in the world. "you're free, you're free, you're free, you're free, you're free" "yes master, I am free, i am free, i am free, i am free"

The problem is massive. The biggest problem is people only vote for two political parties. Third parties do nothing and this has caused a monopoly on power.

This is not helped by the massive amounts of money they spend on advertising. $5 billion in 2008 on 1 president, 33 senators and the house elections. Is it really necessary?

Well in other countries politicians have to find out what people want and then base their policies around that. In the US they spend the money telling people what they want and basically keep the same policies, more or less.

So if you could change the way people are elected to proportional representation, and change how much money politicians are allowed to spend, then you might get somewhere. Problem is the only people who can change these things are the very people who would not benefit from the changes, so they won't, simple as.

The media is also run by very rich people who also have an agenda. A lot of them want lower taxes and things because it will benefit them, others are more liberal, but they all seem to have a political bias and basically do the bidding of the politicians.

But then seriously, you can't expect much in a country that says it is taking democracy around the world yet it's good friend Saudi Arabia is about as democratic as a dead dog, whereas they actually REFUSE to acknowledge Venezuela's democratic election earlier this year. What kind of a screwball country is that?

Well, the problem is the FCC, and what THEY say is permissible. Some things, such as certain words, 7 to be exact, are forbidden. Certain subject matter, gory bloody murder scenes are frowned upon. It is NOT politacally correct to show war and war wounded or the dead in prime time. So, while the 1st amendment does ALLOW things, the "standards and practices" contingent says some things ara off limits in keeping with "family values". I have an old shortwave radio, an R-390, vintage 1945 or so, from the US Navy. I routinely listen to the BBC directly from London. And Radio Moscow directly from Moscow. I love listening to overseas stations for the news. It is wonderful to get thier take on the news in the USA. I watch MHZ on my local PBS TV station and see news from Japan, China, South Korea, Viet Nam and other places around the world. MHZ routinely says in between programs that this is non-edited content from elsewhere and viewer discration is advised. Even with this advisory, they DO blur things, like partial nudity allowed overseas but not in the USA. YES, we have free speech in the USA, but the journalists and networks play the politically correct game... CNN seems to be the best of the worst so to speak, with the fewest edits to "clean up" the news. There is NO substitute for having more than one independent source for the news...

This is why most americans do not know what is really going in the world, and why they think the way they do. They simply do not know the whole story.

I found out many years ago in a communist country where their news was completely different from western news.I decided the truth must be somewhere in the middle.

I doubt if Al Jazeera, a highly respected news agency will be allowed to broadcast freely in the US. few years ago they applied to broadcast in Canada, a country that supports zionism, but the powerful jewish lobby there made sure that Al Jazeera would only be allowed to broadcast if the jewish organization was allowed to censor all broadcasts before they aired. Understandably Al Jazeera withdrew its application.

Most of it is "self censored".

There are six mammoth corporations that own about 90% of the media outlet in the states.

    They are: Time Warner

    Walt Disney

    Viacom

    News Corporation

    CBS Corporation

    Comcost.

These companies own the media and dictate what is to be broadcasted, printed, and aired. They decide if the political truth is to be told, they decide who or what they will campaign for. They decide on what social mores they will tout, or dismiss. These companies own the largest propaganda machine ever produced in all of mankind's history.

They use it to the greatest effect for themselves.

So they are the ones who censor what they don't want you and I to read, watch, or hear about.

Uh, it relatively is not possible for any information business enterprise to conceal each homicide that occurs everywhere contained in the international. that's a lie that every one information related to Muslims is censored. absolutely everyone with any suggestions in any respect understands that.

It's not "censored". It's "creatively edited" to please program advertisers and station owners. Years ago a wise person told me that, if I wanted to know what was going on in the U.S., to read foreign papers and watch foreign newscasts. The trick is to read and watch more than one source. The same goes for reading and watching US-produced news. The items that appear in a majority of the sources, are the facts. The rest is just opinion.

You sound like those liberals who - after reading a book - feel ready to tell the rest of the world how to live. There are standards in place in order to maintain a level of respectability - unlike other nations who egregiously alter the news to make a fictional account of events.

I suggest that people who are trained in psychology and know the written history of the world make the better digesters of news. I cull the news from many sources before arriving at an opinion.
