refrigerator/freezer defrost cycle question?
I am trying to get a general idea if i am being unreasonable or not.. i moved into a place that i have been having lots of issues with the fridge.. when the fridge goes through its defrost cycle.. the fridge part itself is ok. but the freezer gets VERY warm.. at one point. i put a thermometer in there and it was 80 degrees.. and the back wall of the freezer was VERY hot. is it normal for a freezer to do this during defrost cycle.. what is considered a normal temp for the freezer to get to during that cycle. the maintenance people keep telling me. its normal and that the back wall will get very hot during this time. that has never been my experience in any other palce i have lived. my food almost thaws out each cycle... i opened the freezer during defrost cycle and all this hot air was blowing in. almost like a hair dryer was on.

I'm going to agree with Eric, except to say that my freezer doesn't get above 35 or so during the defrost cycle.
There's a thermostat attached to the cooling coil that's supposed to turn off the defrost heater when it gets above 32-35 degrees (which means that all of the ice has been melted off). The defrost cycle will still run its full duration, but without the defrost heater running. On your fridge, this thermostat is broken, and the defrost heater is running during the entire defrost cycle.

It's not normal, my freezer did that for a month before it quit. In most frost free freezers, they do heat up, but only to 45 to 60 degrees for 15 minuets or so then drop back down to freezing.
food kept more then a week in a frost free freezer tends to taste off because of the thaw freeze cycle..
To test your out get an Ice cube and put it in a plate, let the freezer do it's freeze thaw a few times then inspect the cube, if the plate has a frozen puddle of water in it instead of a cube then it's not working right.
