I dont get Game of Thrones Red Wedding. Help?

I don't get fan reaction to The Red Wedding can someone please explain it to me? Like recently i posted my disgust about the episode to this page right after watching and received immediate backlash. Im still a fan of the show but im just wondering why do fans like the death of Rob, Talisa and Cat and why is this considered genius writing? I understand he didn't wanna be predictable but aren't there other ways you can be unpredictable and not knock out three characters in a devistating blow? What was the point, what is GRRM trying to prove? I don't like how GOT and the Walking Dead comic just kill big characters like its nothing just to prove a point i think its stupid

Update:

And p.s. im not saying i want a happy go lucky story full of sunshine and rainbows but id be pretty pissed if in the end the lannisters won. i watch to see the protagonist triumph, not get but banged by the villain

i agree with u to some extent. but its refreshing to face the reality for once, not the crap they'd feed us to keep us happy.

and i say it as a person who cried for 5 minutes after episode 9.

plus the story isnt over yet and no one knows whats gonna happen. i dont think the lanisters will win eventually. that would seriously suck.

GRRM does it because it's realistic. It's just like what real humans are like, and it's totally in character for Tywin Lannister, Walder Frey and Roose Bolton. So... as a scene, it's really hard hitting because everyone is so emotionally invested in the characters, and then seeing them ruthlessly cut down just like real people do... it's really shocking. GRRM killing Robb & co. like this is so fitting with the themes of the book. Being unpredictable is only a part of, mostly it's a comment on Westerosi society, and by association our own medieval ancestors.

Also, before you go slagging off GRRM and D&D you should at least read the books, because it's not the same. Also you should know the aftermath of the RW, which you evidently don't.

EDIT: Talisa was not at the wedding in the books, nor was she even in the series.

For me, the problem is that the red wedding was not true to the book. Rob and Cat were killed at the red wedding, but Talisa was not at the wedding nor was there any indication that she was pregnant. It seems that HBO is more interested in blood and guts to get ratings than they are about being true to the story and they may be shooting themselves in the foot. My guess it that Talisa may show up in subsequent books and HBO will have to make up some ridiculous plot twist to rectify this stupid error.

GRRM has said in an interview that he knew he was going to kill Rob when he killed his father in book one. The classic "Hero's Journey" formula (google it) would have the son getting revenge and making everything right in the world. That is exactly what he did not want to do. He did not want some formalistic plot. And like Hitchcock killing off the star of "Psycho" in the first 30 minutes, to point is to keep the audience off balance, which builds suspense. Don't expect GRRM to write a happy ending.

I suugest you read about Joseph Campbell

How might you no longer recognize? Robb was once presupposed to marry considered one of Walder Freys daughters and broke his vow by means of marrying Talisa. Walder wanted to marry his daughter to a king. Instead he acquired Robb's uncle ( whose handiest a lord ) so he conspired wkth tywin lannister and killed them. Obviously they did not realize it was once coming or they would not have gone. In these occasions guests had been included through guest rights which means even though its your enemy, if they're feasting or staying with you you can't damage them, so that they certainly not ever regarded that. He broke that correct. Only Catelyn got suspicious when the man locked the door, Bolton showed her his armor, and the musicians performed the Rains of castamere, which is the song performed at a Lannister victory

Remember back in Season 1 when Cersei told Ned what happens if you play the game of thrones and don't win?

Robb Stark is dead because of the mistakes he made, pure and simple. It would be unrealistic to expect that a king and war-leader could alienate his allies, lose half his army, have his home invaded behind the lines and end up victorious, just because he's the "good guy".

That's what makes it good writing. Heroes don't get to dodge the consequences of their actions, just because they are heroes.
