Derby winner rating 120+?
I've just read an article (racing post) that informs me that the official handicapper has rated Ruler Of The World (winner of last week's Derby) 120+. This is the worst rating for a Derby winner this century (Sir Percy was given 121 in 2006) and I can honestly say I'm surprised. Ok, the horse had only one twice before but claiming over a 2 length lead with a 1/4 mile to go in a top notch Derby and winning by 1 3/4 isn't bad. Sure, the consensus is he will improve but does anyone else agree that we have a poor Derby winner on our hands? Surely can't be a worse Derby than last years? And if you think to the contrary will Ruler Of The World win the Arc?

ratings need to be put into context.
not every race is fast run where there is a good spread of lengths, not only between the winner and placed horses but placed horse to those finishing midfield.when ths happens the ratings applied will be more accurate to the true level of ability
the problem occurs when we have a slowly run race like this years derby.slow runs races look messy and dont reflect a horses true ability like it would in a faster run race and you often see a bunch finish and not many lengths separating the winner and say 6th place or even worse on occasions
this is because ,when they go too slow early on,they have lots of energy left at the end and those nearer the front of the pace have the advantage.those coming from behind have to overtake horses who aint tiring and it doent become a true test of stamina.
sprint finish races always look messy with not many lengths between the finishers and the form open to question.
so given the fact ruler of the world had to accelerate into a accelerating pace, that is no easy task and the fact he can do it and win by nearly 2 lengths is also worth more..
also just 2 runs with no 2yo form means hes also a inexperienced horse,
comparison to sir percy ,well sir percys derby had a decent pace, but he won in a 4 way photo.he was experienced having won 4 races from 4 inc a group 1 at 2 and 2nd in the 2000 guinas at 3.so thats 5 runs and the last few runs at the top level, where talking about a experience horse with previous top level form struggling to a win a derby from on the face of it ,not up to his class horse just cose behind in 2nd 3rd and 4th.
sir percy derby run was his true reflection,he hadnt either trained on from 2 or failed to stay the distane but his class got him there in the end and he didnt improve on his ratings.
ruler of the world as no previous top level form(gp3 was best he tried) and with only 2 runs,he wins a slow run derby having come from behind and over took horses who were themselves finishing well.
so in that context his rating of 120 doesnt do himself justice.the handicapper could not rate him higher because of the beaten lengths formula he works on.
the last horse to win the derby with no 2yo form was commander in chief,he had 3 runs prior and went onto win again and improve his rating further.
theres no doubt by the way he won and is inexpereince that ruler of the world will get better, the derby a lot of the time isnt the best a horse can do,they can go on to bigger ratings after.

He`s not rubbish, thats for sure! Winning a Group 3 by 9? lengths, then next race winning the Derby by nearly 2 lengths. OK, it was tactical to get Dawn Approach beaten. That muddies the waters when trying to asess the value of the form. Win the Arc? Not sure. I`d have a few bob each way at 12/1.

Will Ruler Of The World win the Arc? If he runs in it, then he has a chance of winning it, as does any other horse running in the Arc against him. Horses are not machines, they are unpredictable and no one can say if they will win their next race or even one race, get distracted by the crowd or lose interest in racing completely.
As for how good a derby winner he is, I have no opinion- he simply was the best horse on the day that stayed the distance. We'll see how good he really is as he races on in the big races against the good horses.
