On the coast, looking West, how far is it to the horizon?
I used to know the answer to this in the sixties when I was in the Navy, but then again that was 50 years ago.

Distance to the Horizon depends on your height above sea level.
When you were in the Navy do you remember a book
"American Practical Navigator" HO Pub 9 by Bowditch.
Most of the time it was just called "Bowditch"
Table 8 in Bowditch - Distance of the Horizon -
This is the formula: in Nautical Miles D - 1.144 times square root of height
in Statute Miles D = 1.317 times square root of height (above sea level)'
Your standing on the beach and your 6 foot tall = 3.2 Statute Miles
