Sulcata Tortoise Question?

So, I want a cheap baby tortoise, and a Sulcata is the cheapest they get.

I really want a baby Russian tortoise, but they are more expensive.

I am aware that Sulcata's get VERY big and I am aware they are the third largest in the world.

I have done a lot of research but I still have some questions..

1) How long does it take for a baby Sulcata to grow it's full size?

As it's a baby, I'm going to keep it in a 100 gallon tank, but once the time comes for me to take him out I will move him into a big fence I have outback of my house ..

2) will he dig a hole under the fence and escape?

3) Do they eat leaves too? or is it just things like lettuces and tomato's .. etc.

4) When he grows to his full size, will he ever try to bite me?

A Sulcatta wil take 10-15 years to become fully grown and at that point they can be anywhere from 18-30 inches long and come in at 50-150 lbs.

They are very strong and determined diggers, so an adult needs a very large pen and it needs to be away from your home because they have been know to collpase a foundation with their burrowing.

A Russian is a much better long-term choce because they only ge tto 5-8 inches long (depending on male or female with females being larger) and even though they are incredible diggers as well, a 3 foot burrow is about as large as they can create.

A Sulcatta can create a 20-30 foot long burrow.

Go with a tortoise table instead of a 100 gallon aquarium. Much better air flow and the tortoise will constantly try to go thorugh the glass and they can seriously damage their beak.

    Good Luck
