Have you taken the auto train from VA to FL?

Did you go with kids? How was the ride? Anything I need to know? I know I need to take a bag with me because I can't get to my car. Anything else?

The Auto Train is a great option to go between Lorton and Sanford. The ride is comfortable and kids tend to enjoy it.

Some friends have put together an unofficial "riders guide" to enjoying a trip on the Auto Train that should answer your questions.

It is the same as any long distance train ride.More comfortable than a plane or bus ride. You can get up and move around.

The difference is your car is travelling as an extra piece of Checked luggage.

You may want to get a room for the kids and you. There are things to do on the train like going for a meal and enjoying the view. Bring some things to keep your kids occupied. A puzzle book or simple games. Pack some snacks and beverage. It gets expensive just eating from the train menu.

It is a nice relaxing trip for the DRIVER of the car. The back seat passengers will have the normal travel issues.

In my opinion, the auto train is useful only if you are starting not too far from Lorton and are ending not too far from Sanford. I had to drive five hours to Lorton, and five hours to Naples after we got to Sanford after we waited an hour for them to unload the car. It wasn't worth the expense. If I lived in D.C. and was headed for Orlando, that would be different.
