Hello! I am a librarian and am glad to help with your math question.

There are a few good resources for math problems like this one. One is "Math is Fun" and they provide a percentage calculator.

If you ask for what the percent of 15 is 75, it gives you the answer (20%) but also why this works.

    http://www.mathsisfun.com/percentage-calculator.ht...

Use the "compare" field to compare 75 to 15 and see what comes up. I see "15 is 20% of 75" - and why? Because:

    Because:

    As a fraction, 15/75 = 0.2

    As a percentage it is: (15/75) x 100 = 20%

Another resource called "Big Ideas Math" on page 2, Activity #3, you'll see this answer too but it's given in a visual way on a graph. Sometimes that helps make more sense:

Hope this works for you! Your public library may also have a tutoring program that is offered free and online to help work on such problems with friendly experts; ask about that at your library when you get a chance.

    Thanks for asking!
