Who was Simon, the failed Messiah?
The man who supposedly challenged King Herod and the Romans after galvanising an army of 2000 followers, and led them to burn down Herod's palace before being slaughtered in the desert by the Romans, and crucified.
That guy. Who was he? And could links and sources be attached to answers, please. I'm very curious about the mysterious warrior.

I thought the failed Messiah was named Brian. Silly me....
Between the time of Judas Maccabee (around 250 BC when the Greeks had invaded Israel) until the destruction of the nation by the Roman general Titus in 70 AD there were hundreds of "Messiahs". And they all failed because they thought that the kingdom God wanted to bring was going to be geo-political. Instead it was suppose to be a kingdom of the heart.
There are several Simons that lead revolts throughout that period, so it is impossible to guess which one you are looking for. Even one of Jesus' 112 disciples was a zealot named Simon (the Zealots being a political party that wanted to overthrow Rome in a violent series of wars.) And the information on them is limited. Israel was not exactly the center of the Roman Empire, and historians did not bother to write much about it.
