Why did Vegeta give up his wish?
He could have gathered the balls to wish for eternal life or whatever he wanted in the beginning. But when he actually had the chance he didn't. Was that his pride that he considered this a cheat in the end? Or maybe I missed something?

He only wanted it so he could defeat Frieza and rule the universe. By the time Frieza was killed, his only other goal was to beat Goku. Also Once he achieved SSJ, he didn't care about immortality anymore. If he did, then he would have made a selfish move at the end of the Buu Saga and wish for immortality.
To conclude you could basically so that all his desires and aspirations diminished or were non-existent, thus he probably thought to himself 'why am I doing this?'
