Comcast/Xfinity, What Components can I buy to lower my bill?
OK, I rent my modem ($7/month) and extra cable box ( the first 2 are free, the third costs me $4/month). I want to purchase my own and stop renting but what brand/model of modems and boxes are compatible with Comcast/Xfinity?
Current equipment:
Modem: ARRIS TM502G
Extra Box: PACE DTA
HD Box: MOTOROLA DCH70
I tried getting my bill lowered by asking about bundles, special offers, etc. But they are not offering anything right now. In fact if you call Xfinity customer service and threaten to go to AT&T, they will tell you they are sorry to hear that tell you what you have to do to get everything shut-down.:-(....They are not working with me anymore.
So, to get my bill lowered I am looking at purchasing my equipment to cut renatl rates. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Yeah, I'm going through the same thing with them... I bought a Motorola SB6141 cable modem from Best Buy for $70. It works great and will be paid for in 10 months.
I live in a bit of a rural area and am having an antenna installed on a 40' tower. As soon as that is up, I'll be letting go of Comcast/XFinity TV services for good and go strictly with over-the-air local channels, NetFlix, Hulu Plus, & Amazon prime via Roku. I'll have more choices than I had before and will be saving about $100 per month.
Obviously, I need to keep my Internet with them, but it's the TV that is expensive.

All you can buy is the cable modem. A standard Docsis3 should do, unless there is something newer.
Provider cable boxes are not for sale at all, at least that you could actually use with little hassle.
All you can buy are second hand boxes which you will have a very hard time to activate on your account, if you can at all, or Cablecard devices which you need to rent a Cablecard anyways, and pay some premium for anyways as they are premium devices not cheap commodity devices as provider boxes are.

I don't think you can buy the cable boxes but you can buy the cable modem. It's about $100, depending on the model you'll need. If you log into Comcast's website, under Services they list what models of cable modem they recommend if you want to buy your own.
Source(s): And if they're unwilling to work with you, maybe you SHOULD give AT&T or whoever a look-see....
