What is the process to renew a passport?
A co-worker stated she was told that she had to get a new passport as opposed to renewing it and it will take 3 months. I was wondering whether or not she was properly informed.

If she got her present passport when she was 15 or under, then she got a child passport. child passports cannot be renewed. You simply have to apply for your first adult passport. If her current passport is an adult passport, she can renew it...unless it has been expired for 5 or more years. See site below.
