Shintaro Ishihara said that Japan is America's "mistress". What does he mean by...?

How much control does the US have over Japan in a post- WWII world in contemporary times? We control their defenses of course but how about economically or other facets?

We don't control their defenses. See: Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan.

Japan is second only to China in foreign-owned US debt.

First of all you really need to know more about Mr. Ishihara. He is a very controversial figure in Japanese politics and a member of the right wing. He is well known for making racist statements against foreigners and always ranting about the superiority of Japan. Some say he is linked to organized crime. He and members of the right wing government want to get rid of a few articles in the Japanese constitution, especially the one that promises that Japan will NEVER have another military again. He wants to bring back the Japanese military which really scares the crap out of the rest of asia. Every time China gets too close to a disputed island or Russia does the same, the American government advises Japan on how to handle the situation. Also since there is no real good leadership in Japan, the government just follows the US position on politics. Mr. Ishihara has for years been saying Japan should be more independent of US policies. The problem is that some of the ideas he and his group are calling for would make Japan an untrustworthy neighbor in some asian countries eyes. Im not saying all his ideas are bad. Some of his domestic policies make sense...but internationally...he is an idiot.
