When did society get so stupid about smoke?

A long time ago, everyone knew the REAL danger to smoking. It went like, "possibly taking a few years short of a full life, small chance of emphysema or cancer at an old age.". The results are the same today; most smoker WILL live past 70yrs old and we all know it! Most won't suffer some sort of 10yr disease either. A few? Well yes, but what about the few that aren't smokers that go through the same diseases????

Somewhere along the line a lot of people got REALLY STUPID about it. Making up the dumbest things like if one smells secondhand smoke they are gonna have health issues or babies can't be raised by smoking parents or they'll die. It seems to have gotten stupider and stupider as time goes by. When did common-sense go out the window and STUPID set in?

Update:

@Auroch - case and point, " And we lived in perfect denial about the incredible (lol..) toxic effects of tobacco". Lets talk about toxic. Ever tried to spend an hour in a garage with a running vehicle? How about a lifetime in a garage with smoker? You tell me, which one is "incredibly" toxic.

Update 2:

@Mark - you see, my sister had astma and so did millions who never had smoking parents. You just automatically ASSUME because your mom smokes that all diseases must be her fault. That is STUPID thinking.

Society hasn't gotten stupider. If anything, they have gotten smarter with years of research and statistics. This stuff had been around years ago, but it was just mainly overlooked. As time wears on and more research is done, people tend to find more and more wrong with things. Take ground beef for instance. Years ago they labeled it all fine, but now they find that some of the pesticides used in cow feed can cause cancer. Same difference in my opinion.

Tobacco has a really interesting theory... It was brought back to England in the 1600's - and very suddenly there were THOUSANDS of tobacco shops in London. It is so addictive. And we lived in perfect denial about the incredible toxic effects of tobacco until quite recently.

Back even a few years the cigarette companies were still denying that cigarettes were dangerous.

Probably when the correlation between smoking while pregnant was correlated with repsiratory problems. (I should know; my mother smoked and I have asthma and allegies.)

Oh, and even if there was no such thing, would you inhale smoke if your house was on fire? Of course not, but that's EXACTLY what is in cigarettes, AND it makes people smell just awful (of course, if you smoke, you can't smell yourself. You probably can't taste food either and have to heavily salt it.)

In other words, stop trying to justify it.
