I have an intense phobia of cracking eggs open. Feedback?

For almost as long as I can remember I've had an intense fear of cracking eggs open (I'd say since I was a teenager). Is there a phobia named for this?

The feeling is tied deeply into the fear of the unknown. I'm afraid of what I'll find, whether it's benign, or impossibly grotesque. Some eggs have two yolks. Some have a hint of blood in them (harmless, but still ruins my life for a second when I witness it). None have, say, deformed birds popping out of them, but my extremely, borderline hallucinative imagination seems to want to push it in that direction, and I can't get the image out of my head.

I don't have a problem with eating eggs either. I love eggs. And I CAN crack eggs, but it takes so much effort and it's just so ridiculously uncomfortable, I'd rather avoid it at all costs. Watching others crack eggs, especially if they're lingering or toying with me with it, induces a similar but generally less intense effect.

Severity ties to my sanity as well. If I haven't been sleeping well, my paranoia grows. But I don't have other paranoia-fueled phobias (As far as I know, I have no other phobias whatsoever. Swam with dolphins, waverun on the gulf of mexico, been parasailing, skydiving, and I love sushi, including those served with caviar) and this is just ridiculous. Eggs are accidentally broken every day and I can't crack an egg? I'm in the medical field for christ's sake, I know darn well that I'm not gonna crack this egg open and have my life ruined as some deformed, writhing, squealing thing drops, sizzling in a pan of boiling oil... XD

The thought of doing that to something, even accidentally, and witnessing it, is nerve-wracking. Perhaps this is why I seek to heal people in career, but it's clearly a potential negative symptom of that desire.

Thoughts? Insight? Is there a name for this? I don't anticipate any innovative advice to a method of overcoming it, so please, unless you have some extraordinary insight, avoid that. I'd just like to know more about this phobia. Do you have a similar phobia?

Update:

Well, user "?", I always try to look on the SUNNY SIDE UP of life. I wouldn't say I'm EGGsaggerating, but I'm glad you took a CRACK at answering it. EGGcellent EGGsplanation and your EGGschange of information is EGGstravegantly.

Now that we got some of the puns out of the way. Someone want to actually answer the damn question?

Update 2:

Typos... Don't even care. Back to the topic.

Update 3:

Lopri2013, excellent incite, though, I would contend that this would qualify as a phobia. I've managed to bring myself to crack an egg several times in my life, but it's intensely exhausting. I supposed a point I could mention to elaborate is that my life isn't really affected by the fear, only because cracking eggs open in day to day life is an easily avoidable thing.

An exemplifying point: Many times I begin constructing something, like preparing ingredients for an omelette, or combining ingredients to make a cake, etc. Many times I do so without having even thought about cracking the eggs, but the moment I get the egg in my hand, I'm immediately plowed with disturbances. 9/10, I resign to throwing out everything I've constructed so far, as such a thing feels less tragic than trying to continue. The times that I have managed to bring myself to crack an egg, were ordeals involving a lot of pacing about, trying to hype myself up, lots of anxiety, shaking, etc. Once

If there's a name for this, then I'm unaware. But new phobias emerge all the time, so I wouldn't be surprised if it did actually have a label. A phobia is an extreme and irrational fear which impacts on your ability to lead a normal life. While your egg cracking fear does seem intense, I don't think it should technically be called a phobia as you seem to be rational enough to actually crack an egg, as opposed to having a mental breakdown when asked to do so (which is what you'd expect from someone exhibiting an egg cracking phobia). With that said, this fear can still be treated using similar methods that one might use to treat a phobia. A lot of these treatments involve learning relaxation techniques and applying them to situations where the feared stimulus is present. A method called Systematic Desensitization is often used in the treatment of phobias, and this involves being exposed to the feared stimulus in graded steps (eg. I fear spiders; start by talking about spiders, then looking at pictures of spiders, then eventually being in a room with a real spider, etc.) and using the relaxation techniques to remain calm despite the feared object being present. Eventually you could even learn to associate the feared stimulus with relaxation (ie. you could learn to automatically feel relaxed while cracking eggs).

Moral: if you're serious about trying to rid yourself of the fear for good, then therapy could definitely be helpful.

Well this is a complex question but I will attempt to give you my feedback and for whatever it's worth. First of all, I haven't eaten an egg in over 15 years because I developed an egg eating phobia. If you like, I can come over and help you crack your eggs. Also you can begin by cracking them with your eyes closed on the days I'm not there.
