Should he cash the check?

A very sweet friend of mine gave my son a $25.00 check for a graduation gift. He has not deposited it or cashed it yet.I found out a couple days ago, money is very tight for her and she may not have enough in he account to cover the check. If my son does cash it, both of them could have service fees (banks charge the person cashing the check fees too when the check bounces) I don't want to embarrass her. I'm thinking of even saying I accidentally washed his jeans and the check was in the pocket just to save her from embarrassment. She is such a sweet lady but has had some unexpected expenses lately.

don't cash it if you don't think she'll be able to afford the 25 dollars

    Ask.

Let her know that your son hasn't cashed that check yet, and you just wanted to make sure that now would be a good time for him to do so.

The thing is, IF she keeps good records, she'll have noted it, and so won't mess up her account. Also, it's leaving a question for her, that may last forever. Her, making sure she can cover the check, but not knowing whether it will ever be cashed.

Yeah tell her you accidentally washed his jeans and the check was in the pocket. That lets her save face.
