sunburn vs tanning bed?

I don't want bashed. I want help! I know and understand the risk but... we all always just want a bit more info.

NO MATTER WHAT I WILL GET CANCER!

I already know this and can't stop nor change it. As a child I was only two months old and got a sunburn just from being in the car in the winter! So my skin is very very very fair. I can put on sun screen and still burn! I was told a long time ago That I should go to a tanning bed only to get a base tan and that was it. This was told to me by a doctor! I just wanted to know how some of you feel about this.

Today I spent the day at the pool and even after putting sun screen on 3 times and staying in the shade a part of it I got burnt bad. I don't have blisters thank goodness but I still got burnt. I wasn't in the water much but maybe an hour in all. Before and after witch I put on new sun screen. By the time I was done I felt like I put on more then the bottle had in it. I'm really starting to feel Like I should get that base tan. I'm tried of putting on sun screen and still getting burned... I have two kids and they love going to the pool and playing and I would hate not being able to ever take them because of my fair skin.

I just want to hear thoughts and Since I have never been tanning in a tanning bed what steps I could/ or should take to keep me safe. Thanks

Again please don't bash me I already know and clearly don't give a hoot its my body not your's thanks.

" I can put on sun screen and still burn!"

SELF-TANNERS: "I've had many patients who think these products somehow offer UV protection or that they give them a 'base tan' so they won't burn," says Dr. Hale, a NYC M.D., dermatologist and vice chair of the Skin Cancer Foundation. "'If I have skin cancer, you'll just remove it, and I'll be OK'. But the color that self-tanners create on your skin is completely artificial. But a lot of young women use these products so they don't look pale when they go to the beach to tan." 86% of women surveyed who use self-tanners reported they'd also baked in the sun, and 36% admitted they'd also used tanning beds (a leading cause of melanoma!) at least once in the past year. Australian study confirms that sunless tanning likely did not reduce the amount of UV exposure women get.

Spray-tan fans beware! Christina Aguilera discovered an unfortunate side effect to her faux-glow when her tan reportedly ran down her leg during her tribute at Etta James's memorial service, People magazine Red Carpet Style issue page 10.

Example 1 from YA: "Spray tan won't come off after 3 weeks! Help!?

I got a spray tan about 3 weeks ago for a formal and it won't come off!

I get a body shower every day and the spray tan around my arms and neck have come off but my chest and legs and stomach are so patchy! Even if I scrub at it with an exfoliation cloth, it will not come off. It's so ugly".

Example 2: "Bad spray tan..can I try to cover it up by going to a high pressure tanning bed?

I used loreal spray tan on myself last night and now my arms are uneven..pale in some spots and dark in others".

Example 3: I just got a spray tan at L. A. Tan (1st time) and when I got home I noticed that my chest area had dark colored dots from the spray tan and it looks really bad with low cut shirts. It's half white and half brown! Is there anything I can do to help blend the color in like lotions or even remove the tan? I don't want to go to school looking like a lady bug!

If you get laser-hair removal DO tell your doctor or technician if you're tan, otherwise he might use the wrong laser setting, potentially burning the skin. Avoid self-tanners for 30 days pretreatment.

Example 4: "About a week ago i got a sun burn on my chest and shoulders from playing sports outside. The burn wasnt too bad but yesterday i went and got a spray tan to even out all the lines for summer. I woke up this morning and my chest and shoulders were peeling from the previous burn. there are now about 3 different skin tones/shades on these areas."

Young & the Restless - today which was Summer's Graduation Day, her mom Phyllis Newman - had a self tanner. Her fingers were pale, the rest of her body had spray tan. Even on soap TV, they have bloopers on fake tan products!

I've been protecting myself from the sun since age 9, but no matter, I got Discoid Lupus. Google that one. It was like someone punched my chin and it gave a purplish mark. It took 12 years for that to fade, so now I'm using a wide brim hat or umbrella for protection. Gene Simmons & Shannon both have been seen hold an umbrella during an event. They were invented before beauty products, for a reason. Google also Bullous Pemphegoid, photos I posted of my mother was too gross & deleted, another skin disorder.

Best protection is wearing DENIM clothing, or a wide brim hat, but better yet, an umbrella they WERE INVENTED to protect us from the elements, rain or shine.

From my experience and living and growing up in Australia the best way to this is naturally...you have fair skin and need to approach it like this, but the same for everyone really. First day in the sun you only expose yourself to 5-7 minutes. Then cover up and cream up for the rest of the day. Day 2 u go for 7-15 minutes...etc increasing each day by 7-15 minutes each day.

You need to build up your melanin levels slowly, and this is why people generally get burned is because they tackle it all in one day. Additionally on days you going out in the sun you need to start eating a few days before raw green vegetables - especially Broccoli, this has been found to help protect skin to exposure. Yahoo search brocolli and sun protection and you should pull up plenty of articles, about this...

Managing sun burn is like starting a fitness regime, you need to slowly build up. Although if you are a natural fair skin person that does not tan then unfortunately you do not have many choices.

Then after or as a natural part of your skin maintenance can use a natural collagen, this is non invasive, no surgery and more importantly there is only one product on the world market that produces this product from Poland. The link give you a full description about this natural collagen that is the same as occurring in your body...

I own a tanning bed and it was one of my best investments. I do burn easily but not as easily as you. Getting a base tan with the tanning bed has helped a lot! I do advise your first few trips be about 10 to 15 minutes and then you can go up to your regular 20 minute cycle. I haven't gotten burnt by a tanning bed once! It is also GREAT for achy muscles and things of that sort. Good luck! (:

Sitting in a tanning booth for 15 minutes is equal to sitting in the sun for 8 hours. Yes you will get cancer either way...but it happens faster in a tanning booth. Just be cautious.
