A punctuation colon is used to explain or start an enumeration. It is completely different than the colon in the digestive tract. Use of the : symbol to mark the discontinuity of a grammatical construction, or a pause of a length intermediate between that of a semicolon and that of a period, was introduced in English orthography around 1600'

"large intestine," late 14c., from Greek kolon (with a short initial -o-) "large intestine, food, meat," of unknown origin.
Derived from the same word, with a different pronounciation , but different meaning.
