When you study the history of the Papacy, do you think it proves that they had no belief in God?
They certainly had no fear of any retribution and strayed a long way from any of Paul's teachings.

The question "do you think it proves that they had no belief in God?" is very general. As individuals some of the popes probably believed in God like most people in the Middle Ages and other ages. But the question is rather whether that belief made the meaningful difference to them the way the Bible understands "belief" as more than just an academic acknowledgement. Also they might have believed wrong things about God, like for example that they were God's No. 2 on earth.

The corruption of christs teachings started with paul and continued with many emperors.
The catholic church is not the only one at fault look at the church of England, some people just saw it as a good tool to gain control and wealth but had they took the slightest notice of what jesus said they could not have done that.
But even in these churches some of the followers were very true to Christ, you will of course have heard of the abuses committed by some catholic priests and you may have heard of the abuses committed in the catholic magdalen women's homes but this is one story you probably won't of heard because only the bad news is spread.

The point you make is one the atheist often misses, there is a big difference between a person who follows Jesus' teachings and one who simply claims to for gain.

The Pope doesn't get a salary.
Only travel expenses are paid and obviously food is provided.
So I think they would have to believe in it all in order to take up the position as there are no real material benefits to the position.
