That really is almost exclusively an American thing. I am not against capitalism, but capitalism almost became a religion unto itself here in the states during the red scare. Combining that with Christianity helped remove some cognitive dissonance, and is still popular among mega churches and others who have an invested interest in holding the prosperous higher than the poor.

The way I read the NT, I think Jesus would be pretty disgusted by this.

Jesus did not teach a Prosperity Gospel the way some do today

    He did teach on giving:

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again

The Lord Bless us to be a Blessing to others. It's not about "me" -- It'as all about Him. :D.

No. And the prosperity gospel is a false gospel.

If Christians are hated and discriminated against by the world because they're followers of Jesus, how can they expect to be millionaires in the "here and now". Us Christians are treated with scorn because we're hated and not welcome. Jesus said the world would love its own, but because we're not of this world, the world would hate us.

Jesus owned very little. The apostle Paul counseled the early Christian congregation at 1st Timothy 6 9 and 10 that those desiring to be rich fall into temptation and many hurtful desires....For the love of money is a root of all sorts of injurious things.

In verse 7 of that same chapter he recommended that sustenance and covering we should be content.

Jesus is an irrelevant prop for the teachings of Prosperity Gospel ... this type of church is making inroads into the faith population of my country ... not huge inroads but they are gaining market share where as the older churches are losing market share ... people are greedy and would justify selling their own mother or children into a bleaker future as long as they feel they are successful ... which they aren't because most of these types of people are outright ar$eholes ...

No, he preached an Un-Prosperity Gospel: the virtues of voluntary poverty. Exactly the opposite of what many are preaching these days.

People who are teaching the "prosperity gospel" as it seems are mainly trying to teach people what the Bible says about giving. Most Christians are too stingy to give what God requires them to give. Ministries cannot go forward without donations. They are dependent on donations, so by teaching people what the word says, they are encouraging them to help God do what he's trying to do through the ministries he raised up.
