''Biggest'' and ''best'' do not necessarily go hand in hand...:-)

''Major'' classical music publishers include (off the top of my head - so in no particular order):

    - Bärenreiter (high-quality, Urtext editions)

    - Breitkopf & Härtel (world's oldest music publishing house, catalog contains over 8,000 works)

    - G. Henle Verlag (Urtext editions, highly-respected editor)

    - C. F. Peters (over 12,000 works, ''default'' editor for a lot of professionals)

    - Boosey & Hawkes (one of the largest specialist classical music publishers in the world)

    - International Music Co. (reliable scores edited by prominent performing artists)

    - Theodore Presser (the oldest continuing music publisher in the United States; beautiful score layout)

    - Schott Musik International (the second oldest music publishing house in the world; most reliable scores)

    - Ricordi (one of the important sources in the world through its publishing of Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, and Puccini - Wiki)

    ''Specialized'' publishers include:

    - Durand (French music)

    - Salabert (French music)

    - Paderewski (Chopin works)

    ''Affordable'' publishers include:

    - Dover (reprints of scores of public domain works, notably Breitkopf & Härtel, C.F. Peters)

    - Kalmus (reprints of classical works that are in the public domain in the USA)

    - Schirmer (extremely popular publishing house with amateurs, *heavily* edited by some of the great artists of the 19th century)

    Best,

    Raymond
