You are most likely looking for something along the lines of text based "Adventure" games such as the forefather to the industry Colossal Cave Adventure which was later built upon to make many others.
When you mentioned this it reminded me of the opening scene to the movie Big starring Tom Hanks.

Graphical Text Adventure games are difficult to find specifically I found one title that seemed to be similar to what you described Heavy on the Magic. This should have some spell like commands during game play.
